As the price of flying falls and falls and as more and more people go out to see the world, holidays are not what they used to be. More and more we are only concerned with flying as far away as possible, finding a beach, doing some crazy adventure activity, taking more pictures than we’ll ever look at and then partying the nights away.
Florence, however, still retains it’s ancient and authentic charm, unlike some cities – many of them even in Italy – that have simply become party havens for the waves of tourists. In Florence you can still enjoy a traditional holiday – you know, see a few museums, try the local cuisine and maybe even pack up a car and take a day trip. Does that really not sound like fun to you? Well, read on to see why these things make Florence the perfect destination!
Florence is full of worthwhile and interesting museums, but the quantity does not take away from the quality. The most famous and most visited museum in the city is the Uffizi Gallery, which boasts works from Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Giotto and Botticelli so you can already imagine that it’d be easy to spend a whole afternoon, if not longer, admiring the numerous works of art.
Aside from the Uffizi, Florence is also home to the Accademia Gallery. Since 1873 the museum has housed the David statue by Michelangelo. The museum was intended to be a sort of ‘Michelangelo Museum’ and you’ll find some of his other works there, such as a Pietà and his four unfinished Prisoners.
In the end, only a small collection of the artwork is from Michelangelo, with work from several other talented artists on show too.
It wouldn’t be a holiday without trying out the local dishes. Florence is, as you know, in Italy and Italy is, as you know, one of the world’s best places to dine. The Italian cooking in Florence is among the best in the country with many talented chefs coming specifically to the city to work.
The foods you must try include pizza, panino, and risotto suppli. But if you don’t want to eat out every night, you can test out your own chefing skills if you rent a self-catering apartment. Oh-Florence.com has a range of self-catering apartments for you to choose from so you’ll be able to find out if your pasta or pizza is as good as the locals’ – or if it isn’t!
Pack up the Car and take a Day Trip
As much as flights are a spectacularly quick way to zip around the world, there’s nothing quite like packing up the car and taking to the road. From Florence there are several places you can head to on a one day trip with a car rental.
One place you can visit from Florence is Pisa. The city’s Leaning Tower is famous worldwide, but other than the tower there is not a whole lot to do in Pisa so a day trip is probably enough and it’s not really worth spending any more time than that in Pisa. But you won’t have the opportunity to take a Pisa day trip from too many cities, so make the most of this chance while in Florence!
On another day you may want to head to the Chianti wine region of Tuscany, where Florence is found. You’ll be able to see the wineries of the region and really relax in the peaceful fields away from all the city noise. And as long as you get out of having to be the designated driver, you can taste some wines along the way!
So as you can see, a holiday to Florence sounds a lot of fun and a little more traditional than a crazy weekend in Ibiza or bungee-jumping in Australia. If you’re not already packing your bags then get started! And enjoy your visit to Tuscany!
