Things to Do in Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The Netherlands or Holland (as some prefer to call it) is one of the most famous tourist destinations all over the world. Upon hearing the name, images of gently turning windmills, criss-crossing canals, and quaint and charming countryside immediately pop into one’s head. Truly, the Dutch have a lot of things to be proud when it comes to tourist spots or destinations, and the list below are just some of the things that tourists can enjoy their stay in this lovely country.

Take a Canal Cruise

This is something that anyone shouldn’t miss when in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam canals are one of the best in the world according to both the locals and foreigners. Seeing Amsterdam on foot is a good way of exploring the city, but seeing the city from the comfort of a gently drifting boat (as part of the tour or on a rented boat) will surely give visitors a different perspective. One of the most favoured is the Amsterdam Jewel Cruises. First of all, this is not a cruise tour, but rather a floating restaurant that offers diners the experience of fine dining on water. The boat only has seats for 20 people and each table is set as romantically as possible complete with candle lights and the works. The great settings and the view of the city from the boat make this dining experience truly a remarkable and unforgettable one.

Ride a Bike

Another way of seeing Amsterdam is on wheels. There are many guided tours on bikes and they are a great way to explore the nooks and crannies of Amsterdam that one won’t usually find on the tourist information guide. There are both companies that offer the tours on a mountain bike or a motor bike. Another interesting way of touring the city on wheels is by riding a segway (a two-wheel self-balancing transportation where one needs to stand). It can travel in appropriately slow speeds and allow the rider to take in the beauty of the place much better.

Visit a Museum

The Netherlands is home to some of the most well-known artists of the world, one of whom is the famous Vincent Van Gogh. Thus, it is but natural that one will find an art museum dedicated to housing many (if not all) of the genius’ works of art. The Van Gogh Museum has an exhibit of about 200 paintings and over 500 drawings of the said painter, and is also a great place to learn about the life, challenges and difficulties that the maestro had to go through in his lifetime.

Try Dutch Foods

Amsterdam is also a place to find some of the greatest food in the world. Instead of eating the usual cuisines and fast food, try indulging in some of the most savoury local food. First on the list is of course cheese, being one (if not “the”) biggest exporter of cheese in the world. Try the different varieties of cheese like the Edam, Maasdammer, and Gouda. One can usually get a plate of cheese in the pubs along with their chosen beverage.  Not to be missed of course are the local delicacies like the bitterballen (deep fried nugget with minced meat fillings and dipping sauce), frikandel (made up of deep-fried minced meat served in a bun), or the world famous Dutch ice cream, which is said to be creamier and richer than any other type of ice cream in the world. If you are more adventurous, try the haring which is raw and slimy herring with pickles and onions – culinary experience you will never forget.

Amsterdam is definitely one of the best tourist destinations in Europe and the whole world – providing travellers with relaxing activities and wonderful experiences that one will not easily forget.
